As soon I saw the Director X and Parris Goebel directed visual for Little Mix’s latest single “Touch” I was left with two opinions that varied greatly on the political correct spectrum. First thought, I love the colorful visual! I’ve become a huge fan of Goebel’s choreography and direction so seeing her vision infused with Little Mix’s girl power was entertaining. But then the PC thought of what fans of these Glory Days pop stars will think of the highly sexualized tone of this video.
Personally I’m completely for women choosing to showcase or withhold their sexuality and I get that there’s always a push to become more provocative as you mature in the music industry, so I hope that the mixers have reached the point where they can appreciate the visual for what it is. Sure this three minute clip is mainly a pastel maze full of shirtless guys grinding on the U.K. group in Yeezy aesthetic attire, but the girls are definitely in control in each frame.
Owning your sexuality can be empowering and with a song titled “Touch” and lyrics like:
“So won’t you take it, I feel like for the first time I am not faking / Fingers on my buttons and now you’re playing / Master of anticipation / Don’t you keep it all to yourself,”
Can you really be too shocked at the concept of the visual? I’ve slowly become a fan of Little Mix and with “Touch” being one of my favorite cuts from their Glory Days record (“Power” is a close second), I think they did the infectious island bop justice. Prepare for the inevitable more mature era of Little Mix guys, I anticipate it’s coming very soon.
P.S.: Shoutout to the girls for executing some dope choreography throughout the ENTIRE video. I vote more music videos of artists doing more than looking sexy for the camera in 2017 🙋🏾♂️
