Excuse my language but Zara Larsson has a fucking smash on her hands! Her latest single “Ain’t My Fault” arrived today and I can’t get enough of the irresistible banger. I might be getting ahead of myself if you have no idea who the Swedish rising star is so let me formally introduce you to another artist that has me excited for the current pop landscape of new artists.
Larsson got her start on the Swedish version of Got Talent (Talang) in 2008 at ten years old. Four years later her debut EP “Introducing” released with the leading single “Uncover” topping the charts and later became certified platinum in Sweden. Two EPs and a debut album later, Larsson is a bonafide star overseas and she’s preparing for international domination with her second studio album.
I became familiar with the “Lush Life” singer after hearing her vocally commanding duet “Never Forget You” with the gifted artist to watch MNEK and I’ve been hooked every since. Her voice has a unique tone with the capability of handling a range of songs from tender ballads to infectious bops. The versatility in Larsson’s voice is one of her biggest strengths, tackling R&B smashes and big dance records with ease. “Never Forget You” definitely garnered a lot of U.S. attention with Zara and MNEK performing the successful single for multiple late night talk shows and reality shows like X Factor and Got Talent. Now that Larsson has the world’s attention, it’s time to establish that international audience, specifically in the states. That’s where “Ain’t My Fault Comes In”.
“Ain’t My Fault” is a horn heavy bop about taking a guy that isn’t too committed to his girl when he’s on Larsson’s radar. There aren’t too many songs that put girls in the player role or in a scenario like this so it’s interesting to think about what Zara and MNEK created with this record. Larsson tackles the verses with a rapping cadence dripping in cockiness and lines warning some girl she’s not responsible for her boyfriend’s actions. When “Ain’t My Fault” hits the bridge Zara shows off a little bit of her vocal range before going back to the catchy hook.
“Ain’t My Fault” is the obvious smash you drop to make sure a new artist doesn’t fade away with releases from heavy hitters dropping left in right for the third quarter. Zara Larsson has done the groundwork to position herself as an artist that is ready for the next level in her career. Her music is great. Stage presence is apparent and if you’re following her on Twitter then you know she speaks her mind and has the personality that makes her refreshing to people that love a honest artist. It’s now up to the public and industry to determine if Zara Larsson becomes a global popstar. I have no doubt that Zara has a hit on her hands “Ain’t My Fault” but we’ll have to wait and see what it can do.
