The Chainsmokers and Halsey are at the top of the charts with ‘Closer’

When I first heard “Closer” by the electronic duo The Chainsmokers and alterna-pop underdog Halsey I knew it would be a hit. Whether it took a few months to gain traction or became a sleeper hit out of nowhere, the addictive earworm has the qualities of a chart topping smash. With an undeniable hook and dreamy production, “Closer” sounds familiar while remaining current with the electronic dance sound. The Chainsmokers Andrew Taggart supplies half of the vocals for this catchy duet and while his vocals aren’t the strongest (His VMAs performance was a little underwhelming), his tone makes “Closer” easy to sing-a-long to and pleasant enough to be overplayed on the radio.

These three artists have gained success in their own right with hit singles and sold out tours but reaching #1 on the Billboard charts with little promotion is an accomplishment that most seasoned artists can’t reach. I’m excited to see how this chart topper affects their careers and their game plan for upcoming releases. The Chainsmokers have a couple big records like “Roses” and the Daya assisted “Don’t Let Me Down” in their catalog without a debut album in sight. While Halsey has been praised and criticized for her indie-pop sound and critically acclaimed electropop debut album Badlands. With streaming services, YouTube and social media creating stars overnight, Andrew, Alex and Halsey just need to continue producing quality music and building off their internet influence to keep their chart topping going. I have no doubt that both The Chainsmokers and Halsey have a few more #1s to come.

What do you think of The Chainsmokers and Halsey’s #1 collaboration? Let me know in the comments!

So baby pull me closer in the back seat of your Rover
That I know you can’t afford
Bite that tattoo on your shoulder
Pull the sheets right off the corner
Of that mattress that you stole
From your roommate back in Boulder
We ain’t ever getting older
