With the recent celebration of hip hop legends like Missy Elliott, Queen Latifah and Lil Kim on VH1 Hip Hop Honors and the wave of popping female rappers including Dreezy, Cardi B, DeJ Loaf, Snow Tha Product and Kamaiyah to name a few; it is a great time to be a woman in the hip hop industry. I feel like the idea of “there can be more than one” when it comes to women in rap music is returning after years of people only letting one woman shine at a time. Kash Doll is becoming one of my favorite new artists to watch and while it seems like people are excited to see more than one woman win in the hip hop game at the same time, more people need to get familiar with the jaw dropping, rapper from the Motor City.
Kash Doll started buzzing back in 2014 after dropping a remix off Tinashe’s DJ Mustard produced banger “2 On” and since then her fanbase (known as “baes”) continues to grow with sold out shows and amassing tons of views/streams on YouTube and Soundcloud. It’s obvious that some follow Kash Doll because of her looks and assets but her authenticity is another reason why I can see her doing well in the game. Keisha embraces her exotic dancing past and has used her looks and personality to gain an audience willing to support her business endeavors and push her music to anyone willing to listen. Her remix to Rico Richie’s “Poppin” was my introduction to the Detroit native as she aggressively let haters know that their hate doesn’t stop her hustle. That led to two solid mixtapes (Keisha Vs. Kash Doll, Trapped in the Dollhouse) showcasing her playful flow and love for her luxurious lifestyle.
With each new release, Kash Doll continues to excite me with her boastful bars that are made to be recited at the top of your lungs. While baes are clamoring for more original music like “Run Me My Money”, Kash Doll is locked into a bad deal that is preventing her from moving the way she wants to. Let’s hope Kash Doll can get this figured out soon because I can definitely see her independent buzz reaching a mainstream audience and once doors open, the sky’s the limit. Just ask Nicki Minaj.
