Janet Jackson continues to prove age ain’t nothing but a number (*sighs deeply if you don’t know that reference*) as she effortlessly kills it in the slick visual for her latest single “Dammn Baby”. The Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis / Dem Jointz produced single quickly became my favorite track off the expecting mommy-to-be’s 11th album Unbreakable that dropped last year in October. Matching the sexy minimal vibe of the mid-tempo banger, the black and white visual for “Dammn Baby” gives Ms. Jackson a blank canvas to serve up some flawless choreography throughout.
As I see the pop legend sharply hit each move without missing a beat, I reflect back on her ability to present epic dance moments with most of the music videos she does (“The Pleasure Principle”, “All For You” and “Feedback” remain personal faves). I’m happy to see a pop star that can do more than look pretty for a camera in their videos. Outside of Jackson’s role in the visual, I love to see her 12 year old tour dancers Kyndall Harris and Taylor Hatala make cameos in the dance-heavy video. If you don’t spend your life scrolling through your Facebook feed to avoid annoying political commentators and pictures of your high school peers children (or is that just me) you might have missed a viral video of Harris and Hatala ethering choreography to Desiigner’s Future sounding hit single “Panda”. I’ll post it below because it shouldn’t be missed but I love that Janet is giving the youth a platform to showcase their talent to the world.
With the recent announcement of Jackson’s first pregnancy with her billionaire husband Wissam Al Mana, we might have to wait awhile before we see some more smooth dance moves on and off the stage but I believe there are a couple more albums left in the pop great. “Dammn Baby” is a solid single and I’d love to see Janet make more dance records on her next album. Everyone loves a song that makes them move and if we can also see Janet Jackson do what she does best on the dance floor than its a win-win!
