After appearing on what had to be the shortest Breakfast Club interview ever to let DJ Envy, Angela Yee and Charlamagne Tha God know they need to put some “respek” on his name, Birdman is cashing in on his instant meme with a new single titled…you guessed it “RESPEK”. Now I’ve never been a fan of Birdman’s solo work and if you checked my music library over the years, you probably would see two or three songs included in middle school mixtapes (I can’t deny “Leather So Soft” and “Stuntin Like My Daddy” are fire) but “RESPEK” isn’t making me want to change my non-fan status.
The song is obviously a gimmick to keep the relevance of this humorous story going before his upcoming music projects drop but it isn’t good. When listening to it, I couldn’t help but think of some up and coming rapper on Love & Hip Hop acting like he was dropping the best bars of his life in the studio while a few engineers did the “I may or may not be feeling this but I’m definitely not tryna get fired nod”. Whether anyone likes “RESPEK” or not the meme will live on through t-shirts and people using some of the perfectly quotable lines in the interview.
