#TeamInternet seems to be making groundbreaking moves for the YouTube community everyday and I continue to become more inspired by the movement. These creatives have found a way to to make a seemingly simple hobby into million dollar careers with complete control over their future whether that be writing a book, starring in movies or fueling a music career. From early Youtubers like Shane Dawson, Tyler Oakley and Grace Helbig to rising stars like Mynameiseva, Kian Lawley and so many others creating success in their respective interests, a personal favorite, Troye Sivan continues to become a full fledged artist and if you have no idea what all the fuss is about, I want to fill you guys in asap!
Troye Sivan has been in the entertainment industry since 2006, competing on music reality shows and starring in a film called Spud which spawned two sequels and helped Sivan gain a small following. During this time the South African born, Australian native posted numerous covers on YouTube with each video helping Troye showcase his singing chops while continuing to gain an audience in the process. By 2012 he started posting vlogs, challenges and connecting with some pretty big names on Youtube (Any #Troyler fans?). From a respectable 27,000 subscribers in 2007, Troye Sivan now has 3.9 million subscribers that have been a part of his personal and professional growth.
I became a fan of Troye after going through a YouTube blackhole and checking out all of your mainstream YouTuber faves, specifically Tyler Oakley who played a role in helping promote Sivan’s music career. In 2013 Sivan signed a deal with EMI Australia and that next year released a five-song EP entitled TRYXE. It was TRYXE that made me take this artist serious as he showcased all of his emotions in a collection of dark electronic dream pop songs full of cool lyrics and nonstop synths. TRYXE debuted at No. 1 on iTunes in over 55 countries and debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 that next week, a huge accomplishment for any artist especially a newcomer.
Now we’re in 2015 and the 20 year old is easily one to watch in the pop scene. From his unapologetic desire to be himself, revealing to his YouTube audience that he was gay in 2013 and encouraging others to be themselves in the process Troye is an artist that is willing to show the good and bad in his life through his perfectly crafted songs and touching visuals. When I heard Sivan’s latest EP WILD in September of this year I was blown away by the growth and direction of his music. The lyrics are honest, catchy and sometimes even a little sexual as they find a home over amazing production that is starting to find a place on the mainstream charts. His visual trilogy alone is enough to make you give up on being an hopeless romantic, but don’t just take my word on it. Give the trilogy a listen.
Fans that are waiting for the full-length debut album won’t have to wait for long. On October 13th Troye went on Beats 1 to talk with Zane Lowe about his musical journey so far and released some major details on the album. We now know, Blue Neighborhood is the title of the album and it’ll be dropping on December 4th 2015. Sivan also released a new song from the album called “Talk Me Down” and like the previous EP, it’s an impressive piece by an inspired artist. I can’t wait to hear the full-length effort, especially after seeing a recorded video of Sivan performing “Youth” (That chorus!). I have a feeling a lot more people will be joining the fandom in no time.
